INTRODUCTION
The Kalita tribe is one of the aborigine tribes of the Indian Sub-Continent. Narakasur, Bhagadatta, Brajradatta etc, the ancient kings of Pragjyotishpur were the forefathers and ancestral kings of the Kalitas. Again, if we go through the historical writings of the noted historians namely Herodotus, Pliny, Hecataeus of Militus, Dr J H Hutton, Reverend M Thomas, Col. Dalton, W W Hunter, Edward Belfore, E A Gait, Bedan Powell, Dr P C Choudhury, B S Guha, Dr Rajmohan Nath, Dr Banikanta Kakati, K L Baruah, Kaliram Medhi, S C Goswami, N N Basu, Dr H K Barpujari, Padmanath Gohain Baruah, H K Bhuyan and a host of others, we find a lot of information and strong database about the aborigine Kalitas of Assam from their valuable opinions. The Kalita tribe has made remarkable contribution towards the evolution and formation of the Assamese Society. Hisotry tells us that there was a Civilization in Assam since ancient times and that too was developed by the Kalita people. Being an aborigine tribe of the territory, the Kalita tribe deserve the fundamental rights to hold, acquire and sale land and to settle all over the territory of India along with political rights. But, it is observed that Kalitas are deprived of these fundamental rights because of the inauspicious impact of the reservation policies of the Indian Constitution. It may be mentioned here that those tribes that had been included in the list of the Scheduled Tribes can avail the benefits of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India and have the fundamental rights as mentioned above. Kalita Janagosthi Sanmilan, Assam- a pioneer social organization of the Kalita people of Assam, has placed demand before the Government to enlist the Kalita tribe in the list of Scheduled Tribes prepared by the Government of India under the Article 342 of the Constitution and also to provide Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for the honorable existence with fundamental rights of the Constitution. The Kalita Janagosthi Sanmilan, Assam has been working to establish its legitimate demands since its inception.
